Technical Assurance is proud to share that the Bulkley Building restoration was recognized with a Distinguished Restoration and Adaptive Use Award at the 2026 Celebration of Preservation, hosted by the Cleveland Restoration Society and AIA Cleveland.
Held on Friday, March 20, 2026 at the historic Ariel LaSalle Theatre, the program recognizes projects that successfully preserve and reposition significant buildings across Northeast Ohio.
Originally constructed in the early 1920s and located within the Playhouse Square Historic District, the Bulkley Building is a contributing historic structure with deep architectural and cultural significance in downtown Cleveland.
The award reflects a collaborative restoration effort that addressed both exterior and interior elements of the building. Technical Assurance served as the engineering firm for the façade and exterior envelope restoration, while Berardi Partners led the interior scope.
Technical Assurance’s work focused on the rehabilitation of the deteriorated terra cotta cornice and underlying structural systems—balancing preservation of historic detailing with performance-driven upgrades. Custom-fabricated components were used to replicate original profiles while improving long-term durability and constructability.
Exterior construction was completed by WR Restoration, with Architectural Fiberglass, Inc. supplying the custom GFRP components used to replicate historic detailing. Historic Preservation Group, LLC provided preservation consulting to support alignment with historic standards.
Today, the Bulkley Building has been repositioned as a vibrant mixed-use destination within Playhouse Square, supporting residential, office, and retail uses and contributing to increased activity and connectivity within the district.
Technical Assurance is proud to have contributed to this effort alongside Berardi Partners, Playhouse Square Foundation, and the full project team.
The Distinguished Restoration and Adaptive Use Award recognizes projects that not only preserve historic character, but also deliver meaningful impact to their communities. This project reflects the value of coordinated design, engineering, and construction in extending the life and performance of historic structures while enabling their continued relevance.
Technical Assurance is proud to have contributed to this effort alongside Berardi Partners, Playhouse Square Foundation, and the full project team.
